The Canon EOS C300 ($13,999) is the midrange model in the company's lineup of professional video cameras. It sits in between the C100 Mark II ($5,499) and C500 ($19,999) in terms of both price and features. As the middle child in the EOS Cinema family it struggles to find its place, and ultimately we think it's a tough sell. If you don't need the broadcast features, the C100 Mark II is an attractive alternative at less than half the price, and if you do have the need go ultra high-end, you might as well future-proof your investment by opting for the C500, which has 4K recording capability.

Design and Features
The C300 has all the markings of a serious video camera, including a modular design with a removable handgrip, an external LCD that can mount on the chassis or be moved off-camera, dual CompactFlash memory card slots, and more buttons than you can shake a stick at. Without any accessories attached the body measures 7 by 5.2 by 6.7 inches (HDW) and weighs about 3.2 pounds. But the size and weight balloon when it's fully loaded; with the handle, monitor, and handgrip attached, the C300 is 11.2 by 7.3 by 11.9 inches in size and about 6 pounds in weight.

The EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera is an evolutionary 2nd generation Cinema EOS 4K camera system with a wide range of new and improved features including 4K/2K/Full HD internal and external recording (including 4K RAW output) and a new 10-bit Canon Log 2 Gamma.

It's difficult to look at any part of the body and not see controls. The bulk of the buttons and dials are located on the left side. These include buttons to adjust the camera's multi-step neutral density filter, magnify the view to confirm critical focus, and to adjust the lens aperture. The camera provides direct control over the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture so you can control exposure. And it includes on-screen waveform and zebra highlights, so you can be sure that you're not under or overexposing your footage. There's no autoexposure mode, so you'll have to make sure that the scene is exposed properly on your own. Documentary filmmakers who may need to power on the camera to get a quick shot may be disappointed by this.

There are some additional controls on the rear, including the Func. button that toggles between shutter, ISO, and aperture adjustments, and a monochrome rear information panel. That's also where you'll find the dual CF card slots, and the bulk of the I/O ports. These include Sync Out, Genlock, Time Code, and HD/SD SDI for broadcast environments, a clean HDMI output to connect to an external recorder, a remote control port, connections for the external modular LCD, an SD slot for firmware updates, a headphone jack, and the DC power input. The handgrip, which attaches to the right side, can be removed if desired, and when you take it off the interface jack that it connects to is revealed.

There's a removable handle that attaches to the top of the body. The external LCD, which is 4 inches in size with a 1.23-megapixel resolution, can mount to the front or top of the handle via a cold shoe interface. The LCD also includes a mount for a shotgun mic and two XLR inputs, but Canon doesn't include a mic with the camera. The Sony VG900 has an edge there, as it incorporates a shotgun mic into its design. But it's better suited for event and documentary work, as it omits the broadcast functions that the C300 includes and isn't built to the same rugged specifications as the C300.

An external mic is really a necessity to get good audio, so you'll need to keep the LCD mounted even if you opt to use the big eye-level EVF to frame up shots. The 0.52-inch viewfinder is very sharp in its own right thanks to a 1,555k-dot resolution. The external LCD panel does fold down to make it less obtrusive, but doing so blocks the shooting, audio level, and playback controls that it includes. The integrated LCD of the C100 Mark II isn't quite as versatile in terms of where you can place it, but it does cut down on size, and its removable handle also includes dual XLR inputs and a microphone mount.

Video Quality and Conclusions
The C300 records video at up to 1080p30 resolution. That lags behind the 1080p60 video supported by the C100 Mark II. The C300's color sample rate is better—it records MPEG-2 footage to CF cards at 8-bit 4:2:2 quality with a 50Mbps bitrate. That's good enough for broadcast, and it retains enough data for use with a green screen and for color grading. The C100 Mark II only offers AVCHD at 28Mbps or MP4 at 35Mbps when recording to a card. But you can attach an Atomos Ninja 2 ($695) recorder to the camera and record 10-bit footage in PRORES 422 format, and gain the benefit of a 60fps frame rate for much less money.

The C300 uses an 8.3-megapixel Super35 image sensor. It's about the same size as an APS-C sensor on a still camera, 24.6 by 13.8mm. The low pixel density allows for high ISO shooting—the base ISO is 320, but you can crank the camera all the way to 80,000. In practical purposes, though, you're not going to be able to push it that far and get great footage—ISO 5000 is the top setting that I'd recommend. This is another area where the Sony VG900 has an edge; it uses a full-frame 35mm (24 by 36mm) image sensor, which allows for more control over depth of field and also opens up more wide-angle shooting possibilities. A 24mm lens on the VG900 is plenty wide, but on the C300 it's just a moderate wide-angle. The VG900 is more limited in frame rates, however—it only rolls footage at 1080p24.

There are plenty of manual focus aids available, including peaking and magnification, that make it possible to really nail focus, even when shooting with a wide aperture lens like Canon's excellent EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM. But the autofocus system is also quite capable. The C300 uses the same dual-pixel AF system as the EOS 70D SLR. It smoothly changes focus along with the scene, and the focus area is marked on the Live View feed so you can make sure your subject is within it. But, just as we experienced with the 70D, dual-pixel AF can struggle in very dim light. If you're shooting under those conditions, manual focus is the way to go.

At close to $14,000 it's clearly intended for broadcast and film production, but unless your budget is quite tight, you'll probably want to move up to the C500 for those purposes. It offers support for 4K video capture, which is a format that's just impossible to ignore in the current market. If you don't need the broadcast tools, and simply want to get the best video possible for your documentary or event videography, the EOS C100 Mark II is just an all-around better option. It's extremely affordable, and you can add an inexpensive external recorder in order to bring its video quality up to the same standards as the C300. This is one case where choosing a model that's somewhere in the middle doesn't get you a bowl of porridge that's just right—it gets you either too much or too little camera.
