With regard to both of the above threads, note that the Microsoft Update Catalog functionality has changed since the directions were written. There is no longer a 'basket' to which you add updates for subsequent download; also the site appears to work with Firefox (at least the latest version) in addition to Internet Explorer. When you decide upon an update to download, just click the 'download' button at the right. A window will open with a link to the desired update. Click on it (or right-click) and save it. What you do next depends on the type of file: exe and msu files can simply be double-clicked to execute; cab files must be extracted first.

If you want to get the printer driver immediately without going through Windows Update, you can use the following procedure.

1. Follow the steps at the beginning of ElderN's thread to stop Windows Update from 'searching forever.'
2. Preferably using Internet Explorer, go to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/home.aspx
3. Type 'Laserjet 1200' (without quotes) into the Search box at the Update Catalog
4. The search will result in 160 hits (remember I said this would be messy; you have to figure out the correct file to download instead of having Windows Update do it for you automatically). For the 64-bit version of Windows 7, the file you want should be the second from the top.

6. A download window will open; download the file (4188_bacd1413e93b4a6362d9a2ca653c869f1c02f6f7.cab)
7. The easiest way to deal with a *.cab file is with a third-party archive utility. A good one is free 7-zip (http://7-zip.org/)
8. Extract the contents of the *.cab file to a folder; make a note of the folder's name and location
9. Run the 'Add Printer Driver Wizard' as previously explained, but when you get to the list of printer drivers, click the 'Have Disk' button.
10. Use the 'Browse' button to navigate to the file where you had extracted the contents of the *.cab file and select the *.inf file (which should be prnhp001.inf), click Open
11. Complete the Wizard, which should install the driver
12. Connect your printer, which should now be recognized and installed.
