To guide you in right direction we want to know:

1. What is the make and model of your computer?
2. Have you installed all the updates on your computer?
3. Do you get any error code or error message?

I would suggest you to follow the below methods:

Method 1: Run the Hardware and Device troubleshooter by following the steps below:

1. Click on the Start button, and type “Troubleshooting” on the search bar.
2. Click on troubleshooting, then click on “Hardware and sound”.
3. Under Hardware and sound, click on “hardware and devices”.
4. A pop-up will appear, click on the “Next” button and your hardware troubleshooting will start.

Method 2: The issue may occur if the drivers for scanner are not installed or updated. I suggest you to install/update the latest version for drivers by downloading it from the manufacturer website.

Method 3: You can try installing the drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps:

1. Press the ‘Windows key on the keyboard.
2. Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
3. Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.
4. Select the drivers and install.

I managed to get through to HP's help desk and after they came onto my PC and tried various things they advised me to buy a more modern printer. As a pensioner I find that an unacceptable alternative. I asked them to report it as a customer of theirs I expect them to be proud of their products and to provide the necessary drivers when a major upgrade takes place. I am however not very optimistic !
